Indeed. There's been a fair wad of analysis of maternity and the responsibilities of the mother. In fact, there are some (male) theorists who take motherhood as the ideal to which we should all live up. They have been ripped to shreds by feminist theorists, of course, as they ought to be. But it's still intriguing to think about how women are taught to be risk averse (which of course manifests itself physically, as Young argued (not in a thoroughly unproblematic way, I might point out) in 'Throwing Like a Girl') and authority-respecting, ESPECIALLY in relation to other people (be careful not to hurt their feelings, to make sure everyone's feeling okay etc etc), whilst those characteristics in men are often deemed 'effeminate' or even 'gay'. Grr @patriarchy!
